What If I Have No Employment Contract in Cyprus?

Many hospitality workers in Cyprus start jobs with nothing in writing — no contract, no written terms, sometimes not even a payslip. But the absence of a written contract does not mean you have no rights. Here is what you are still entitled to.

The Short Answer

Cyprus Law

The absence of a written contract does not remove your employment rights. You are still entitled to the minimum wage, paid annual leave, payslips, and protection from unfair dismissal. Your employer was also legally required to provide written terms within your first month of employment under the Transparent & Predictable Working Conditions Law 25(I)/2023.

Rights You Still Have Without a Written Contract

💶
Minimum wageYou are entitled to at least €979 per month on hire, rising to €1,088 after 6 months — regardless of what was verbally agreed.
🏖
Paid annual leaveYou are entitled to 4 weeks of paid annual leave per year, regardless of whether this was specified in writing.
📄
PayslipsYour employer must provide itemised payslips for every pay period, regardless of whether you have a written contract.
🛡
Unfair dismissal protectionAfter 26 weeks of continuous employment, you are protected from unfair dismissal — whether or not you have a written contract.
🏛
Social InsuranceYour employer must register you and make Social Insurance contributions throughout your employment, regardless of contract status.

What You Can Do

1.
Request written termsWrite formally to your employer requesting your employment contract or written statement of terms. They are legally obliged to provide it.
2.

3.
File a complaint if refusedIf your employer refuses to provide written terms, the Department of Labour Inspection can investigate and take enforcement action.
